A private sleeper bus crashed into a group of devotees in Koppal, Karnataka, killing three people and injuring four, police said on Monday.
The accident happened on National Highway 50 near Kookanapalli village as a group of worshippers was walking toward the Huligemma temple in Huligi village. The bus was on a trip from Sindhogi to Bengaluru.
The victims were identified as Annapurna, 40, Prakash, 25, and Sharanappa, 19, all residents of Tarihala village in Gadag district. A fourth person was badly hurt and taken to Koppal District Hospital, where another was treated, while one person survived with serious injuries.
Superintendent of Police Dr. Ram Arasiddi visited the crash site and inspected the scene. The incident is being investigated by Munirabad Police Station, and a formal case has been filed. Authorities are still looking into how the accident happened.
The tragedy occurred just a few hours before the devotees were set to reach the Huligemma temple after starting their padayatra two days earlier. The incident has shocked the local community and raised concerns about road safety for pilgrimages in Karnataka.
