Three potters died in a hard‑hit road crash on National Highway‑19 in West Bengal’s Hooghly district early Saturday. The accident happened near Kanajuli, inside the Gurap police station area.
A car that the men were travelling in on the way back to Asansol suddenly lost control. It slammed into the back of a moving vehicle, wrecking the front end of the car and leaving the three inside badly injured.
Local residents were the first to pull the passengers out. Gurap police were called to the scene, rescued the injured drivers, and rushed them to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital. Unfortunately, the doctors declared all three dead upon arrival.
The victims were identified as 30‑year‑old Divas Mandal, 28‑year‑old Kaushik Mandal and 38‑year‑old Nimai Das. All were potters by trade. Divas lived in Hingalganj of North 24 Parganas district, Kaushik in the Haroa police station area of the same district, and Nimai in Rabindra Sarobar police station around south Kolkata.
Preliminary police findings suggest the driver may have fallen asleep while driving at high speed between 4 and 5 a.m., causing the loss of control. A senior Hooghly police officer said the investigation will continue to confirm the exact cause.
The bodies have been taken for post‑mortems, and family members of the deceased have been informed. The news has cast a shadow over the potters’ neighbourhood, where residents mourn the tragic loss.
