Chennai’s weather office has sounded the alarm for parts of Tamil Nadu, predicting thunderstorms and light to moderate rain on Saturday. This comes as a strengthening low-pressure system brews over the Bay of Bengal, stirring up gusty winds and showers across coastal and inland areas.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai explained in its latest update that a cyclonic circulation spotted Friday morning over the central and northeastern Bay of Bengal has shifted westward. It quickly turned into a low-pressure area and is now a well-marked one hovering over the north and central parts of the sea. Experts say it will keep moving west-northwest over the next day, aiming for the southern Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh coast. It could hit land as a depression by Saturday morning, shaking up weather in Tamil Nadu, nearby Puducherry, and Karaikal.
For Tamil Nadu residents, expect thunderstorms popping up in a spot or two, along with light to moderate rainfall. Winds could pick up to 30-40 kmph in bursts, especially during heavier spells. The real concern hits the hilly and western districts like Coimbatore, the Nilgiris, Theni, and Tenkasi, where isolated heavy downpours might cause trouble.
Officials urge folks in these zones to stay alert for waterlogging, slick roads, and poor visibility if rains intensify. Fishermen out on the water should watch for strong gusts in nearby seas and play it safe. The RMC stresses keeping an eye on fresh bulletins, as this system ramps up near the East Coast.
Local authorities and emergency teams are on standby to check flood hotspots and tackle any issues. All this unfolds as Tamil Nadu gears up for the northeast monsoon season, with the Bay of Bengal’s activity set to bring more scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms in the days ahead.
