Chennai, Oct 20 – As Diwali gear‑up heats up, police have set up a high‑visibility security network across Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur and Tiruvannamalai to keep the celebrations safe and orderly.
Huge police presence
More than 3,500 officers have been posted in key towns – Vellore, Arcot, Arakkonam, Ambur, Tiruvannamalai, Cheyyar and Vandavasi – to guard main roads, markets and shopping streets. Deputy Inspector‑General G. Dharmarajan ordered special precautions at popular festival spots, focusing on traffic control, crowd management and curbing petty theft.
Multi‑agency teamwork
Teams from the local police, Tamil Nadu Special Police, armed reserves, Home Guards and crime units patrol around the clock. They monitor busy intersections, keep an eye on crowds, and respond quickly to any incidents.
Traffic and vehicle monitoring
Eighty‑five checkpoints have opened, especially on inter‑district roads. These checkpoints use mobile X‑ray scanners at stations like Katpadi, Arakkonam, Tiruvannamalai and Jolarpet to block illegal firecracker shipments. Additional CCTV cameras cover high‑traffic areas such as Vellore, Gudiyatham, Ambur, Vaniyambadi and Tiruvannamalai. A drone squad now watches Tiruvannamalai town during peak devotion for the Arunachaleswara Temple, ensuring fast detection of any trouble.
Technology boosts safety
District HQs run control rooms that stream CCTV footage in real time, flag suspicious activity, and help locate missing persons. Police also run a facial‑recognition mobile app, feeding updates into district‑level WhatsApp groups for instant action against known offenders.
Visibility and response
Four‑wheelers and motorcycles patrol streets on motorcycles to maintain a visible presence and to reach any problem spot quickly. Women are urged to stay alert to chain‑snatchers, and local shops distribute scarves as a precautionary measure.
Emergency services ready
Ambulances and Fire & Rescue Service teams have posted at key locations, ready to handle any injuries or urgent incidents that may arise during the festivities.
The coordinated effort aims to keep Diwali celebrations joyful, smooth and crime‑free across the northern districts. —
