Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Hails Tirupati Resolution for Boosting Women Empowerment in India

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla shared an exciting update from Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, where leaders just wrapped up a major conference on women empowerment. Speaking at the closing session on Monday, Birla said the newly adopted Tirupati Resolution will drive real change. It promises to unite efforts and determination to push India toward social and economic transformation, with a big focus on inclusive development for women.

The event was the first National Conference of Committees on Empowerment of Women from Parliament and state legislatures. It kicked off on Sunday and drew representatives from over 20 states. Discussions zeroed in on building sustainable ways to give women economic power, ending with everyone agreeing on the Tirupati Resolution.

So, what does this resolution actually do? It sets out a straightforward plan to advance women empowerment across India. Key points include using a "gender lens" in every government ministry and department to make sure women’s needs come first. It calls for more funding in health, education, skills training, and entrepreneurship. The resolution also pushes for gender-responsive budgeting—basically, making sure budgets treat women fairly—and building stronger technical skills at national and state levels.

On the tech side, it aims to close the digital divide by getting more women into STEM fields (that’s science, technology, engineering, and math). It promises better cybersecurity, wider digital literacy programs, and tools to help women create tech themselves. At its heart, the resolution reaffirms women-led development as key to India’s progress. It commits to improving women’s education, health, safety, dignity, and self-reliance, all to achieve the vision of a developed India, or Viksit Bharat, by 2047.

Birla made it clear: women empowerment isn’t just a nice idea—it’s essential for society and the economy. "By investing in women’s health, education, skills, and entrepreneurship, India can tap into huge human potential and create a strong, resilient development model," he said during his speech.

Over the two days, talks covered everything from social challenges to economic independence for women. Birla praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ongoing push to get more women into economic roles. He pointed to success stories like women’s self-help groups across India. These groups help women sell their products at home and abroad, boosting swadeshi (made-in-India) goods and ramping up women’s involvement in the economy.

Birla also celebrated women stepping up in leadership. From science and technology to space, sports, and beyond, women are making waves. "Only through women-led development can we turn the dream of Viksit Bharat into reality," he added.

Looking ahead, Birla announced plans to urge every state legislative assembly speaker to set up Committees on Women Empowerment and Child Welfare. These groups will check on state policies and schemes, see how they’re impacting real lives, and suggest improvements. They’ll also share best practices between states to spread what works and spark new ideas.

The conference wrapped up on International Day of Democracy, and Birla tied it all together. He called Indian democracy more than politics—it’s a core value, like equality, dialogue, and participation, woven into our culture. As the "Mother of Democracy," India has championed these ideas for centuries.

Birla urged viewing women empowerment as the backbone of national growth, not just welfare. He remembered trailblazers like Savitribai Phule, who fought for women’s education in the 1800s. He shared inspiring examples, like schools in Maharashtra teaching older women in villages to hit 100% literacy goals. Stories of rural and underprivileged women excelling in education, business, and leadership show what happens when opportunities knock—big transformations follow. Birla called for spreading these chances to everyone, so women can join India’s progress as equal partners.

A big highlight was gender-responsive budgeting. Birla explained it’s not just about money; it’s a smart way to weave women’s needs into the whole development plan. Budgets should promote social justice, giving women equal shots at healthcare, education, skills, and jobs. This lets them lead the charge in nation-building. By applying a gender lens to spending, women’s issues move from the sidelines to the center of planning.

The conference also heard from key figures like Andhra Pradesh Governor S Abdul Nazeer, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, Parliament’s Committee on Empowerment of Women Chairperson D Purandneswari, Andhra Pradesh Assembly Speaker Chintakayala Ayyanna Patrudu, state committee chairperson Gowru Charitha Reddy, and Deputy Speaker K Raghu Rama Krishna Raju.

This Tirupati gathering feels like a game-changer for women empowerment in India, blending big ideas with practical steps. With the resolution in place, it’s all about turning talk into action for a brighter, more equal future.
