In Chennai on Saturday, Tamil Nadu BJP leader Nainar Nagendran urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to head to the flooded Theni district and take swift action to help residents who are still struggling to cope with the severe monsoon‑driven floods.
Nagendran said the government must set up relief camps immediately and make sure people in the inundated areas are safe. He described the situation in Theni as “heart‑wrenching” and called the flooding a disaster that should have been avoided with proper preparation.
The BJP leader blamed the DMK state government for “man‑made” negligence. He argued that the Water Resources Department had not desilted canals or maintained reservoirs before the northeast monsoon, and that no early warning system was in place to protect the public.
Nagendran also raised concerns about the sudden increase in water released from the Mullaiperiyar dam. He noted that only 1,000 cusecs of water had been let out four days ago, but on Saturday night the outflow jumped to 7,163 cusecs, suggesting mismanagement might have worsened the flooding.
“We are seeing people lose homes, cattle, and farmlands overnight,” he said. “The ‘model government’ is moving at a snail’s pace in rescue operations, and that’s unacceptable.”
He called on Stalin to visit Theni personally, oversee rescue work, and ensure swift opening of relief camps, rapid rescue efforts, and timely emergency compensation. The goal, according to Nagendran, is to restore normality in the flood‑ravaged district as quickly as possible.
