The Tamil Nadu government today announced a one‑day holiday on October 21 for all state‑run offices, public sector companies, schools and colleges. The day off will let people who spent Diwali at home return to their families without the usual rush.
Diwali falls on October 20 in Tamil Nadu. Workers, teachers, students and public‑sector employees often travel long distances over the line of the festival. The holiday is meant to ease the traffic and make the journey safer.
To balance the extra day off, the government will treat Saturday, October 25, as a working day for government offices and schools. This is meant to keep the overall workload steady.
The decision follows repeated appeals from teachers’ groups. The Tamil Nadu Primary School Teachers Association asked for a holiday after Diwali, saying that the weekend travel would crush roads and public transport. “Teachers, students and education officials will travel to their hometowns over the weekend and return the next day,” said C. Arasu, the association’s state president. “Giving October 21 off will cut congestion and keep everyone safer.” The association also added that a holiday on the day after big festivals is common practice elsewhere.
Government officials say they reviewed input from all departments, education bodies, transport and district officials before making the announcement. The move is aimed at protecting the health and safety of the hundreds of thousands of people making journeys during the festive period.
With this new holiday, schools and colleges will have a two‑day break over Diwali, resuming normal classes on October 22.
