Tamil Nadu’s coastal districts have ordered school holidays after the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of a heavy‑rain deep depression moving toward the region.
What’s happening?
- The IMD issued a Red Alert for eight districts and an Orange Alert for ten, including Chennai.
- The weather system formed over the Bay of Bengal early Tuesday and is expected to grow stronger in the next 24 hours.
- Winds of 45–55 km/h, with gusts up to 65 km/h, will hit the coast, making sea travel risky for fishermen.
School and college closures
- In Chennai, only schools—both government and private—will stay closed.
- In Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Kallakurichi, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, and Thiruvallur, both schools and colleges will be shut for the day.
Why?
Officials warn of very heavy to extremely heavy rain in the Red Alert zones and heavy to very heavy rain in the Orange Alert zones. A strong tide and wind storm could cause flooding and power outages.
What are authorities doing?
- Local administrations are on high alert, keeping relief camps ready.
- The Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority (TNSDMA) has deployed response teams across coastal districts and boosted monsoon preparedness.
Stay safe
Residents in low‑lying and coastal areas are asked to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow weather advisories closely while the deep depression intensifies before its expected landfall along the Tamil Nadu–Andhra Pradesh coast.
