Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin shared his deep grief over a deadly stampede at a political rally in Karur that killed 36 people and injured more than 58 others. The chaos erupted Saturday night as a huge crowd surged to hear actor-turned-politician Vijay, the head of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), deliver his speech. What started as excitement quickly turned into a tragic crush.

In a late-night statement, Stalin offered his heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families. “This is an unprecedented tragedy,” he said. “My deepest sympathies go out to the bereaved families, and the government stands with them during this tough time.”

Stalin acted fast to provide relief. He announced Rs 10 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund for each family who lost a loved one in the Tamil Nadu stampede. Seriously injured people getting treatment at hospitals will receive Rs 1 lakh each. The government also pledged to cover all medical expenses for the injured.

To get to the bottom of the Karur stampede and stop future mishaps, Stalin set up a judicial inquiry led by retired Madras High Court judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan. The team will probe crowd management, event safety steps, and any failures that led to the disaster. They’ll deliver a full report to the government soon.

Top officials jumped into action right away. School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi and Health Minister Ma. Subramanian hurried to Karur to oversee rescue and medical efforts. Extra doctors and paramedics arrived from nearby districts, with special intensive care set up for those in critical condition. District Collectors from Tiruchirapalli, Namakkal, and Erode brought emergency response teams to help.

Stalin plans to head to Karur tonight to personally comfort the grieving families and check on the injured from the TVK rally stampede.

Police secured the rally site and started digging into why crowd control broke down so badly. Officials are asking everyone to stay calm, skip the rumors, and let emergency relief and medical aid keep flowing.
