Chennai, Nov 9 – In a fresh push to enforce the Nilgiris district’s ban on single‑use plastic, the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) has told all drivers and conductors in the Ooty region to stop passengers from bringing prohibited plastic water and soft‑drink bottles onto buses heading to the hills.
The move follows complaints that illegal plastic bottles were still making it onto government buses. M. Jaishankar, TNSTC’s general manager for the Ooty zone, issued a circular that ordered conductors from all six branches under the region to warn passengers before leaving the Mettupalayam bus stand in Coimbatore – the main gateway to the Nilgiris.
“In every bus bound for the Nilgiris, drivers and conductors must ensure passengers do not carry plastic bottles,” Jaishankar said in the notice. He added that officers at the Mettupalayam stand must keep a close eye on the buses to enforce the ban. The circular warned that staff who ignore the directive will face disciplinary action.
The order aligns with the district administration’s long‑running anti‑plastic drive, which aims to protect the Nilgiris’ fragile ecosystem and keep popular tourist routes free from litter. “Drivers and conductors should remind passengers about the plastic ban before the bus departs,” Jaishankar explained. He also clarified that buses operated from other TNSTC branches that travel to Nilgiris must follow the same rules.
Officials say the new measures will tighten enforcement at the source and keep plastic waste from entering one of Tamil Nadu’s most sensitive hill settings. The initiative highlights the state’s commitment to eco‑friendly tourism and the protection of the Nilgiris’ natural beauty.
