Tamil Nadu’s Higher Education Department just announced plans to hire 881 more guest lecturers for government arts and science colleges across the state. This step tackles urgent teaching shortages and keeps classes running smoothly for students.
The decision builds on a recent batch of over 500 guest lecturers already brought on board, as demand for higher education surges in Tamil Nadu. Officials want to avoid any classroom disruptions from a lack of full-time teachers, especially since filling thousands of assistant professor spots has hit snags like legal hurdles.
In a push to make higher education more accessible, the department added over 15,000 new seats for the 2025-26 academic year. They’ve also rolled out fresh courses that match today’s job market and study trends. To reach more students—particularly those from low-income families—the state opened 15 new government arts and science colleges in various areas.
Still, around 4,000 assistant professor positions remain empty in these colleges due to ongoing delays in permanent hiring. That’s why guest lecturers are stepping in now, phase by phase. The first round filled 516 spots, and this latest call covers 881 more across 38 subjects to boost teaching power right away.

This temporary fix ensures students, especially from underprivileged backgrounds who depend on these public colleges, get solid teaching without interruptions. It’s all part of a bigger plan to stick to the academic schedule while sorting out the long-term recruitment issues in Tamil Nadu higher education.
