Tamil Nadu police have arrested popular YouTuber Felix Gerald after he made what they call defamatory and misleading comments about a deadly stampede at actor-turned-politician Vijay’s campaign rally in Karur. The tragic incident on September 27 claimed 41 lives, including several women and children, during a Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) event.
Authorities say Gerald’s recent video risks stirring up unrest and spreading misinformation while an official probe continues into the stampede. Police had already warned that anyone posting content to create fear or disrupt public order would face strict action. They’re now urging people to avoid rumors and help with the investigation.
This arrest happened just hours after Karur Town Police filed a First Information Report (FIR) against top TVK leaders. The FIR names TVK General Secretary N. Anand (also known as ‘Bussy’ Anand), State Joint Secretary Nirmal Kumar, and Karur West District Secretary Mathiyazhagan. The case, filed at Karur Judicial Magistrate Court No. 1, involves five sections of the Indian Penal Code, such as causing death by negligence and ignoring public safety rules.
Police have already picked up Mathiyazhagan, and a special team is questioning him in Karur.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin rushed to the scene right after the disaster and vowed to hold everyone accountable. “We’ve set up an inquiry commission led by retired judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan,” he said. “It’s our job to stop tragedies like this from happening again. And we’ll take action against those who spread rumors that disturb the peace.”
Opposition AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami slammed the DMK government’s handling of crowd control and safety. “Officials failed to protect innocent lives,” he said. “We need a full, transparent investigation—not some cover-up.”
Vijay, whose TVK party organized the rally, shared his heartbreak and promised full cooperation. “My thoughts are with the families enduring this terrible loss,” he said. “We’ll work with investigators to deliver justice and support for the victims.” TVK has also pledged financial help to those affected.
The stampede has sparked heated discussions on safety at political rallies and events across Tamil Nadu. The state government plans tighter rules for crowd management and public gatherings. Meanwhile, opposition figures push for independent checks and more accountability to avoid future disasters.
