Heavy Rain Disrupts Life in Uttarakhand, Schools Closed Amid Flood Threats
Uttarakhand is facing ongoing heavy rainfall, causing widespread disruptions across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts for Tuesday, warning residents of intense weather conditions.
Due to the heavy rains and thunderstorms, authorities have ordered the closure of schools up to Class 12 in several districts as a safety precaution. These districts include Pauri Garhwal, Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Champawat, Pithoragarh, and Bageshwar.
The IMD has forecasted very heavy rain and thunderstorms, with some areas experiencing extremely intense rainfall. This has raised concerns about flash floods, landslides, and sudden increases in river water levels, especially in hilly regions prone to natural hazards.
In Dehradun, the Tons River near Minas motor road has swelled dangerously due to the heavy rains. Once it joins the Yamuna River, there’s a risk of flooding in the plains. Meanwhile, traffic on several national highways has been severely affected by landslides, causing long delays and road closures.
In particular, many routes in Chamoli district are blocked, including roads at Kanchan Ganga, Bhanerpani, Kameda, and between Kotdeep, Lolti, and Nasir Market Tharali. These closures are making travel difficult for residents and travelers running the popular Char Dham Yatra and Hemkund Sahib Yatra, which has now been postponed until September 5.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have warned people living in vulnerable areas to stay cautious. The heavy rains and ongoing weather alerts highlight the need for residents and visitors to stay safe during this challenging time.
Stay updated with official weather warnings and follow local safety advice to avoid accidents during this heavy rainfall season.
