Shashi Tharoor Pushes for Better Tourism Boost in India
Mumbai, September 13: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor made a strong case for ramping up India’s tourism sector during his speech at the Skal India National Congress 2025. He pointed out how tourism creates jobs, boosts government revenue, and drives economic growth for the country.
Talking to reporters, Tharoor said, "We have a lot to do. Tourism is very important—it gives employment to people and increases revenue for the government. We need to improve our infrastructure right away."
Tharoor didn’t stop there. He highlighted the urgent need to make India safer for women tourists, a key factor in attracting more visitors. "Our nation has an image that India isn’t safe for women. We must change this. Deploy more women police officers in tourist areas to build trust," he urged.
He also called for more mid-range hotels to fill the gap in India’s hospitality sector. "Right now, we either have high-end 5-star hotels or very poor quality options—nothing in between. We need to build a lot more to cater to everyone."
These ideas come at a great time, as India’s tourism and hospitality sector gears up for massive growth. A recent IDBI Capital report predicts the industry could hit nearly USD 60 billion by 2028, fueled largely by domestic tourism.
The report forecasts that domestic visitors will double from 2.5 billion in 2024 to 5.2 billion by 2030, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.4%. Factors like better air, road, and rail connectivity, plus rising corporate travel and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) events, will push this forward.
Looking further ahead, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) estimates that spending by domestic and international travelers could nearly triple to Rs 33.95 trillion by 2034. Experts stay optimistic about the domestic hospitality space, thanks to demand-supply mismatches and free trade agreements (FTAs) that make travel easier.
With these projections, Tharoor’s push for better infrastructure and safety could help India turn its tourism potential into reality, creating jobs and revenue for millions.
