Tribal communities prepare traditional welcome for PM Modi at Dediapada

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to land in Gujarat’s Narmada district on November 15, where he will lead a national celebration of Birsa Munda’s 150th birth anniversary at Dediapada. The day has been named “Janjatiya Gaurav Divas” by the PM and will draw thousands of tribal families for a grand gathering.

The event will give Modi a chance to speak directly to tribal communities about the Union government’s plans to boost their empowerment and regional progress. The visit is also highly personal for Modi, who will start the day with prayers at the Yaha Mogi Devmogra Dham in Devmogra village—about 30 km from Dediapada. He first came to the shrine back in 2003 while a young chief minister of Gujarat and stayed in the forest for three days to learn the needs of locals. The shrine’s priest reportedly told him that he would one day become India’s greatest leader—many now see that prophecy fulfilled.

For the people of Narmada, Modi’s return to the temple after more than twenty years is a welcome that builds on decades of change. The district was once one of Gujarat’s most underdeveloped areas, but under Modi’s leadership—both as chief minister and now as prime minister—it has seen big strides. The iconic Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue that honors Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, sits here, and the expanded Sardar Sarovar Dam now irrigates large swaths of farmland and supplies water across Gujarat.

Since 2003, the Van Bandhu Kalyan Yojana has given tribal families legal land rights—a key step in uplifting indigenous communities. Today the district has a tribal university, top‑rated schools, affordable housing under the Awas Yojana, modern roads, and round‑the‑clock electricity.

Education is a big success story. Khokhra Umber Primary School in the region now enrolls 80 students, taught by 10 dedicated teachers. The district’s Primary Education Officer says learning now reaches every child—in a place where, when Modi was chief minister, he personally visited tribal villages and urged families to send daughters to school. Those visits paid off, and now classroom doors swing wide for all kids.

Residents band together to greet the PM with drums, red rice, and colorful clothing. In Devmogra, the modest Yaha Mogi shrine has grown into a major spiritual and tourist spot, with 24‑hour power, better roads, and a spot on Gujarat Tourism routes.

One house near the helipad in Dediapada has a striking Warli painting by local artist Bhumika Kothiya. The artwork shows tribal heritage and connects to Modi’s “Prime Minister Awas” home programme, making the welcome feel even more personal.

Officials are tightening security and logistics for the trip. Modi’s speech on Janjatiya Gaurav Divas is expected to outline a new vision for tribal welfare and inclusive growth, emphasizing that real development reaches the last mile when it lifts the most marginalised.

The visit marks a moment of celebration for Birsa Munda’s legacy and a tangible reminder of the progress made in Gujarat’s Narmada district.
