Kolkata University Protest Sparks Debate on Student Safety
In a shocking incident, a talented student from Jadavpur University in Kolkata passed away under mysterious circumstances on Thursday. Her body was discovered near the university’s lake, raising serious concerns about campus safety. The next day, Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, the student wing of the Trinamool Congress, took to the streets in Kolkata to protest, demanding better security measures.
Trinamool Congress MLA Debabrata Majumdar led the charge, speaking out against the unsafe environment at Jadavpur University. "One of our brilliant students died in a suspicious way yesterday. We don’t know if it was a push or something natural, but the campus isn’t safe for anyone," Majumdar told . He urged the university to install CCTV cameras across the premises right away to prevent such tragedies. The protest highlighted growing worries about student safety at Jadavpur University, one of Kolkata’s top institutions.
This isn’t the first time Jadavpur University has made headlines for controversies. Earlier this year, in March, students faced backlash when the administration denied permission to celebrate Ram Navami on campus. Student Somsurya Banerjee shared his frustration with , explaining how a group of students submitted a formal request on March 28 for the Hindu festival celebrations. But they got a written rejection, citing the Vice Chancellor’s absence.
"We wrote to the university seeking permission for Ram Navami as general students of JU. They replied that they couldn’t approve it because the VC wasn’t there," Banerjee said. He pointed out what he called unfair treatment, noting that the Students Federation of India (SFI) got the green light for a political event on April 3 and 4—also during the VC’s absence. Banerjee added that other religious events, like Iftar during Ramadan, happened without any issues. "We even emailed the police to assure peaceful celebrations and expected everyone, including student unions and the administration, to support us," he said.
The Ram Navami permission row at Jadavpur University fueled debates on campus equality and religious freedoms. As protests continue over the recent student death, calls for CCTV installation and improved safety protocols are growing louder in Kolkata’s student community. Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the cause of death, but the incident has put Jadavpur University safety under the spotlight once again.
