In a surprising incident at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, Trinamool Congress councillor Sheikh Aminul Islam got arrested on Sunday while trying to board a domestic flight to Mumbai. The councillor, who represents Ward 14 in Pujali municipality in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district, had a magazine and six rounds of 7.65 mm cartridges hidden in his baggage.
Security staff spotted metallic objects during the routine luggage scan and pulled Islam aside for a thorough check. When they searched his bags, they found the items right away. Islam couldn’t explain why he was carrying the ammunition or provide any valid permit for it. Airport officials quickly arrested him and turned him over to the local police, who have now launched an investigation into the Kolkata airport arrest.
So far, Trinamool Congress leaders haven’t commented on the matter.
This airport drama unfolded on the same day as another alarming event in south Kolkata. Early Sunday morning, two unidentified men burst into a gym at Charu Market, wearing raincoats and helmets to hide their faces. They fired a few shots from their guns before fleeing the scene on foot. Luckily, no one got hurt in the gym shootout.
Police believe the gym owner might have been the target and are actively investigating the attack, including hunting for the suspects. Kolkata authorities are keeping a close eye on these back-to-back incidents involving firearms in the city.
