Biplab Kumar Deb, the former chief minister of Tripura and now a key BJP strategist for West Bengal, fired a strong warning at the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Tuesday. The BJP’s co‑in‑charge for the state said law and order had collapsed and that “human values” had disappeared under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Last month, the party named Union Minister Bhupender Yadav as the main in‑charge and Deb as the co‑in‑charge for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. Now, Deb is calling on voters to seize a change in the state’s politics for the 2026 vote.
He said the TMC’s rule has seen rising rapes, murders and arson, and that despite being a woman, Banerjee’s governance has damaged the state’s heritage and culture. “The sacred land that has produced so many great thinkers and eminent personalities is now being tarnished,” Deb said after offering prayers to Goddess Kali.
Deb is confident that the BJP will win the next assembly election with support from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He called Banerjee a “demon,” noting the reversal of her previously gentle image. While not naming her directly, he raised questions about the alleged accumulation of wealth by Banerjee’s relatives and party members, urging the people of West Bengal to oust the TMC.
Using a historical analogy, Deb compared Banerjee to Mir Jafar, warning that the state might lose the honor associated with her name. “Just as no one names a child Mir Jafar today because of his betrayal, one day no girl will be named Mamata because she has defamed that name through her actions,” he asserted.
He also accused TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee of ties to land mafia and claimed that voters are ready to end unlawful activities and corruption in West Bengal. “This time, the battle in Bengal is not merely political; it is to protect human values and to free Bengal from these demons,” the former Tripura chief minister declared.
