Kolkata, Oct 22 – The Trinamool Congress (TMC) blasted the centre on Wednesday for ignoring West Bengal’s flood‑stricken communities and withholding relief funds.
In a social‑media post, TMC leaders accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government of “abandoning” Bengal while other states receive money after disasters.
“Bengal is left cold as the centre refuses a single rupee for relief,” the TMC wrote. “HM Amit Shah poured ₹1,950.80 crore to Maharashtra and Karnataka during their flood crisis, yet we have been left out.”
The TMC points to the national disaster relief funds. This year, the centre released ₹13,603.20 crore from the Special Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) and ₹2,189.28 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to other states, but Bengal isn’t on the list.
“We’re weaponising federal funds to punish Bengal for the BJP’s defeat in the 2021 assembly elections,” the party said. It called the move a “deliberate financial strangulation” and warned that the harsh treatment would backfire in future elections.
West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also slammed the centre for what she calls a step‑motherly attitude toward Bengal’s disaster‑hit people.
The TMC’s comments add to rising tension between the state and the central government amid a severe weather crisis that has toppled homes and displaced thousands across the state.
