Tripura Pushes for GI Tag on Famous Agar Tree to Boost Local Economy
In a big step for Tripura’s farmers and economy, the state government is working hard to get a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for its renowned Agar tree. Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath shared this exciting update during a meeting in Agartala on Wednesday.
The minister met with a group from the All Tripura Agar Wood Association and revealed that they’ve already sent a proposal to the central authorities for the GI tag. This move aims to protect and promote Tripura’s unique Agar wood, which is famous worldwide for its rich aroma and use in perfumes, incense, and medicines.
Things have really picked up since the Tripura government launched the Agar Wood Policy back in 2021. This policy has sparked a boom in the Agar industry, turning it into a promising source of income for locals. "Our government’s efforts are paying off," Nath said, highlighting how the policy has encouraged more people to get involved in Agar cultivation.
To make it even easier for farmers, the Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department and the Forest Department are teaming up to set up Agar nurseries. They’re bringing Agar under agro-forestry programs and planning to give out free saplings to interested growers. This will help spread Agar farming across the state and create more jobs.
Nath pointed out that Tripura’s Agar has huge demand both inside the state and across India and abroad. By integrating it into agro-forestry, the government hopes to rake in even more revenue. Last year, Agar cultivation in Kadamtala, North Tripura district, brought in significant GST collections, giving a real boost to the state’s coffers.
Farmers are now super keen to plant more Agar trees, and Nath plans to push for stronger support in the next cabinet meeting. He took a dig at the previous government, saying they did little to promote Agar cultivation. "Tripura Agar is world-famous, and we’re making sure it shines," he added.
The numbers tell the story: Last year alone, sales of Agar chips and oil hit Rs 25 crore. Interest is spreading fast—farmers from other districts are jumping in, and big companies are lining up to partner on Agar projects. Chief Minister Manik Saha is fully on board with this initiative, which could transform Tripura’s agriculture scene.
With these efforts, Tripura’s Agar industry looks set to grow bigger, benefiting farmers and the economy alike. Stay tuned for more updates on how this GI tag push unfolds for Tripura Agar wood.
