Tripura: Int’l drug syndicate with Pakistan link busted (Lead)

In a major win for India’s drug‑control effort, authorities in Agartala seized 800 grams of high‑purity cocaine and arrested two people last week. The haul was valued at around Rs 8 crore, making it one of the largest cocaine recoveries in the country’s northeast in recent months.

The operation was a joint effort between the Assam Rifles and the Customs Department. Police said they acted on credible intelligence that a Pakistan‑based drug syndicate was smuggling cocaine into India via the Punjab border. From there, the drugs were routed through surface transport to Tripura and other northeast states before being smuggled out to Bangladesh and Southeast Asia through Mizoram.

On Monday, November 17, a coordinated raid in Agartala’s central area caught two Indian nationals in possession of the cocaine. Assamese forces helped with surveillance and safety during the bust.

Officials confirmed that Pakistani nationals were part of the network and that Indian operatives from several states aided the trafficking ring. The Defence Ministry’s spokesperson highlighted the seriousness of the seizure and praised the Assam Rifles for their relentless commitment to a drug‑free society.

The agency’s statement also underscored its ongoing goal of protecting young people from drug-related dangers and maintaining security in the region.

In a separate operation targeting cannabis cultivation, a large drive was launched on Tuesday in Tripura’s Sepahijala district. Police, the Tripura State Rifles battalions, the Central Reserve Police Force and the Forest Department joined forces in a joint raid.

Police Super‑intendent Bijoy Debbarma led the action, which covered six areas under five police stations. As a result of the raid, the authorities destroyed nearly 1.2 million semi‑mature cannabis plants worth an estimated Rs 50 crore. This move marks a significant blow to illegal drug cultivation and trafficking in the state.

These coordinated actions demonstrate India’s growing resolve to crack down on international drug syndicates and curb the spread of narcotics across its borders. The Assam Rifles, Customs Department and other security agencies are working together to keep the country safe from the harmful effects of drugs.
