Agartala, Oct 17 — Tripura, a state in India’s northeast that produces more electricity than it uses, is preparing to send power to Nepal, the State Power and Agriculture Minister Ratan Lath Nath told reporters.
Nath opened a new 132 kV sub‑station at Gokulnagar in Sepahijala district and used the occasion to explain the plan. “We are studying how to export electricity to Nepal,” he said. “The central government will make the final decision after a meeting in Delhi.”
Tripura does not share a border with Nepal, but the Himalayan country borders five Indian states, including West Bengal, where power can flow through inter‑state grids. The state itself runs a long‑term electricity supply contract with Bangladesh that started in 2016. Since that first agreement, Tripura has renewed the arrangement twice and now sends over 100 MW to Bangladesh, sometimes reaching 160 MW.
A Bangladesh official recently asked for at least 250 MW to meet its growing demand, but Tripura’s central power company, the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), has not yet agreed. “We’re looking at the request and will decide,” a TSECL representative said.
Getting electricity from natural gas is becoming harder, so Tripura is boosting generation efficiency. With a World Bank loan of ₹935 crore, the state plans to double its output by using combined‑cycle gas‑turbine technology at the Rokhia plant in Sepahijala. An 800‑MW pumped‑storage project is also underway in Dhalai district, and the detailed project report is in progress.
To keep the supply flowing, the state will build a new 400 kV sub‑station at Suryamani Nagar. In addition, Tripura aims to power all government offices with rooftop solar panels, turning roofs into mini‑power plants.
These initiatives show how Tripura is turning its surplus power into an export drive, first to Bangladesh and soon to Nepal, while modernising its own grid for a cleaner, more efficient future.
