Agartala, Oct 25 – Police in Tripura made headlines yesterday after arresting seven club members who violently attacked the Officer‑in‑Charge (OC) of a local police station during a puja‑related event.
The attack began when Inspector Shibu Ranjan Dey and his team tried to stop a DJ from playing loud music well past the permitted hours. According to authorities, club members rushed onto the stage, dragged Dey down, and physically assaulted him. The confrontation quickly turned chaotic, and the OC was taken to a hospital for treatment.
A video of the incident spread rapidly on social media, sparking outrage across the state. Police registered a case under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and secured the arrests of the club secretary, the puja committee president, the club secretary, and four other members.
Chief Minister Manik Saha called the arrest a “strict action” against the accused and vowed to protect public safety. Opposition parties, including the CPI‑M and the Congress, condemned the assault and called for swift justice.
The Tripura High Court has repeatedly issued orders banning high‑volume sound systems after 10 p.m., but many clubs and puja organizers continue to ignore these directives. A senior lawyer warned that violating noise‑pollution regulations can lead to fines, equipment seizure, or even jail time.
Investigations into the assault and related violations are ongoing.
