In Tripura’s Dhalai district, a 24‑hour state‑wide shutdown sparked violent clashes that left several people injured. The protest, organized by the Tiprasa Civil Society (TCS) linked to the TIPRA Motha Party, demanded actions such as the deportation of illegal migrants and raised eight points of contention.
Violence erupts in the market
At the Santirbazar marketplace, TCS activists forced shopkeepers to close their stores. When some traders resisted, a heated fight broke out. A larger wave of supporters, outnumbering the police, began looting shops and setting a vehicle on fire. Firefighters tried to extinguish the blaze, but their truck was vandalised. The streets turned dangerous as traders staged a counter‑protest, leading to more clashes.
Injuries and official response
Police were dispatched to the scene but were overwhelmed. A police officer, Samudra Debbarma, received a head injury from a brick. Block Development Officer Abhijit Majumdar and Engineer Animesh Saha were also attacked; Majumdar’s vehicle was targeted and he sustained head wounds. Trader Biplab Deb suffered a serious eye injury. All victims were taken to Kamalpur Bimal Sinha Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Chief Minister Manik Saha condemned the violence. On X, he blasted the “violent attack” on officials and residents, assuring swift and strict action against those responsible. The district magistrate and collector imposed an indefinite curfew in the Kamalpur sub‑division to stop the escalation.
Curfew and security measures
Under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), the curfew bars assemblies larger than four, weapons, provocative speeches, and vehicle entry into prohibited zones. Police also deployed large security forces as the situation remained tense.
Broader context
Tiprasa Civil Society, led by TMP MLA Ranjit Debbarma, has rallied across the state, using sit‑ins and flags at over 52 key sites and on some railway tracks. The shutdown came amid persistent tensions around migrant policies and local demands for political and social reforms.
As Tripura moves forward, authorities aim to restore calm and investigate the incidents thoroughly. The unrest underscores the volatile mix of political activism and public order that can erupt over sudden shutdowns and large‑scale protests in the region.
