Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara shared exciting updates on the Tumakuru Metro project during a press meet in Tumakuru on Monday. The city, just 70 kilometers from Bengaluru, could soon see its long-dreamed metro line become reality.
Parameshwara explained that the Chief Minister announced a feasibility study in the 2024-25 state budget to extend the metro from Madavara to Tumakuru. Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) took on the job. They issued tenders worth Rs 3 crore and handed it to a Hyderabad-based firm, which just delivered its report to the government.
The state has greenlit the report and directed BMRCL to draft a detailed project report (DPR) using a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. “The first phase alone could cost Rs 20,649 crore, and several private companies are already showing keen interest,” Parameshwara said.
On September 25, the government issued orders for BMRCL to prepare the DPR for the 59.6-km Tumakuru Metro line under PPP, again at Rs 3 crore. “This project is moving forward steadily, and Tumakuru residents’ hopes for better connectivity look set to come true soon,” the minister added.
In other news from the event, Parameshwara highlighted rapid progress on the caste census in Tumakuru district—a key survey on social, economic, and educational status. The district ranks second statewide in speed.
The Department of Backward Classes Welfare is leading the effort across Karnataka, with school teachers serving as enumerators in 12,285 blocks. In Tumakuru, teams are covering 6,544 blocks and 755,483 households. “We’re moving faster than most other districts,” Parameshwara noted, speaking at the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
