Police in West Bengal’s Baruipur district arrested two men Wednesday night for the brutal gang-rape of a 60-year-old woman in Kultali, South 24 Parganas. The shocking attack happened late Tuesday night, and authorities are still hunting for a third suspect on the run.
The three men showed up at the victim’s home around midnight, aiming to steal chickens from her backyard poultry coop. When the woman woke up to the noise and confronted them, they dragged her inside and assaulted her. She told police she was home alone that night because her husband was in the hospital recovering from eye surgery. The attackers threatened her with a homemade pistol and a sharp weapon during the crime.
Officers nabbed two of the suspects quickly, but the third slipped away. Baruipur police launched a full search operation, alerting nearby stations to watch for him. On Thursday, the two in custody will appear in a South 24 Parganas court, where prosecutors plan to request police remand for further questioning.
This incident adds to a string of disturbing rape cases in West Bengal over the past year, many involving minors and drawing national outrage. One of the most infamous was the August 2023 rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, which sparked widespread protests across India. Authorities continue to tackle these rising crimes in the state.
