Tragic Ambush in Manipur: Two Assam Rifles Jawans Killed, Five Injured in Terror Attack

In a shocking incident, unidentified armed militants ambushed an Assam Rifles vehicle in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on Friday evening, killing two brave jawans and injuring five others. The attack highlights the ongoing security challenges in the region, as security forces battle militancy in Manipur.

The ambush happened in the Nambol Sabal Leikai area, a denotified zone along the highway. A column from the 33 Assam Rifles was traveling from their Patsoi base to Nambol when the terrorists struck suddenly. "Our troops fought back fiercely, but two personnel lost their lives in the fierce exchange of fire," a defence spokesman told reporters. The injured jawans received quick medical help and are now stable at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal.

No militant group has claimed responsibility for the Manipur terror attack yet. But security forces aren’t wasting time—massive search operations are underway in Bishnupur district to hunt down the attackers. A large team of Assam Rifles and Manipur Police, led by top officers, has cordoned off the area and launched combing operations. "We’re leaving no stone unturned to catch these cowards," a police official said.

Eyewitness accounts describe how heavily armed gunmen opened fire on the vehicle heading from Imphal to Bishnupur. Two jawans died on the spot from bullet wounds, while the five survivors got immediate evacuation. This comes amid rising tensions in Manipur, where ethnic clashes and militancy continue to disrupt peace.

In other positive developments for Manipur security, forces arrested six militants from banned outfits across three Imphal Valley districts in the last 24 hours. This crackdown shows how authorities are ramping up efforts against insurgency.

In Imphal West, police nabbed three hardcore members of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (PWG): Leishangthem Tondon Singh (34), Leishangthem Anand Singh (34), and Heikham Hemchandra Singh (41). They seized two self-loading rifles, two modified .303 rifles, one INSAS rifle, nine magazines, and 99 cartridges from their homes.

Another PWG cadre, Taorem Tomchou Meitei alias Pena (45), got arrested in Andro, Imphal East district. In Thoubal district, forces picked up an active member of the banned People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) from Ichan Khunou. They also caught Khoinaijam Bhumeshwor Singh (24), a cadre of the Socialist Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (SOREPA), in Samaram Mayai Leikai—along with a dummy gun and three cartridges.

These arrests weaken the militant networks in Manipur and bring some relief amid the violence. Stay tuned for more updates on the ongoing operations and the investigation into the deadly ambush.
