Two police officers lost their lives and another was critically injured in a fierce gunfight with Maoists in Palamu district, Jharkhand. The deadly encounter happened early on Wednesday morning in the dense Kedal forest, under Manatu police station area. The police team was out on a search operation when the firefight broke out.
Palamu Superintendent of Police (SP), Reeshma Ramesan, confirmed the tragic news, stating that two police personnel, Santan Kumar and Sunil Ram, were killed in the gun battle. The injured officer is in critical condition and receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.
The police operation was launched based on intelligence reports that Maoist leader Shashikant Ganjhu, known for carrying a Rs 10 lakh reward on his head, might visit his home village during the Karma festival. As security forces approached the area, Ganjhu and his armed squad spotted the police, opening fire without warning. The police returned fire, leading to the fierce gunfight.
In the exchange of gunfire, three police officers were injured, with two succumbing to their injuries. The injured officer was rushed to Medinirai Medical College and Hospital in Daltonganj, where doctors declared both of the fallen officers dead.
Kedal forest, in particular, has long been known as a hub for Maoist activities, with Ganjhu leading the TSPC (Tritiya Sammelan Prastuti Committee) in the region. Authorities believe he remains a major threat, involved in extortion and violent crimes across Palamu and neighboring districts.
Following the firefight, security forces intensified their search operations and closed off nearby villages to track down Maoist militants. The police are determined to eliminate the Maoist threat and ensure safety in the region.
Paying tribute to the brave jawans, SP Ramesan said, “Their sacrifice will not go in vain. We are committed to wiping out extremism from this area.” She also assured the public that all efforts are being made to provide the best treatment for the injured officer.
This incident highlights the ongoing Maoist challenge in Jharkhand and the brave efforts of security forces working tirelessly to maintain peace and stability.
