India’s University Grants Commission (UGC) is cracking down on 54 private universities that haven’t shared key details about their operations online. These schools, spread across states like Gujarat, Haryana, Assam, Punjab, and others, ignored repeated reminders to post information on their websites.
The UGC pointed out that these institutions failed to submit required data under Section 13 of the UGC Act, 1956, or make it publicly available online. Universities must disclose important facts about their courses, research projects, faculty members, student numbers, infrastructure, finances, and academic activities. This info should be easy for anyone to find—no logins or sign-ups needed—so students, parents, and others can make informed choices about higher education.
Despite letters, emails, and virtual meetings pushing them to act, these 54 universities didn’t comply. Now, the UGC has released a full list of the non-compliant private universities on its website, covering states including Rajasthan, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Manipur, Sikkim, Tripura, and Madhya Pradesh.
UGC Secretary Professor Manish Joshi sent a direct letter to all of them, urging quick updates to their sites and submissions to the commission. He stressed, “Students and parents must have access to complete and authentic information about higher education institutions before making crucial decisions.”
Some universities are already reviewing their files and promising to update soon, but the UGC says that’s not enough. They want the details uploaded online and officially sent to the commission for proper oversight.
This push for transparency in higher education aims to boost accountability and build trust among students and stakeholders. You can check the complete list of these 54 non-compliant universities on the official UGC website to stay informed about India’s education landscape.
