Umang, a special‑needs school in Korba, Chhattisgarh, is turning heads by giving free, top‑quality education to about 50 children with disabilities. The school, run by the District Mineral Foundation Trust and backed by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, teaches in Braille and through sign language so that every student can keep pace with their peers.
“This school was created for kids who struggled to find a place in regular schools,” says District Collector Ajit Vasant. “We’ve launched Umang Diyang Vidyalaya with no tuition fees. All 50 students study here at zero cost, and we match teachers to each child’s abilities so they receive the support they need.”
In addition to academics, Umang offers a range of creative classes—music, dance and art—all tailored to the children’s interests. The school also provides hearing therapy and physiotherapy, ensuring every student gains the skills for a smooth transition into mainstream society.
Teacher Indu, who works at Umang, explains how the curriculum adapts to each child: “We design a learning checklist that reflects each student’s progress. When a child shows advanced skills, we move them up a level.” She stresses that teaching students with special needs requires “more than knowledge; it needs patience, kindness and a lot of warmth.”
“Right now we’re focusing on teaching all five senses,” she notes. “It’s a challenge, but the patience we invest brings the best results.”
With free tuition, personalized instruction, and extra‑curricular support, Umang is setting a strong example for inclusive education in Chhattisgarh.
