A woman named Puspavati, 30, who lived in Tapassihalli on Bengaluru’s outskirts, ended her life this Monday after months of abuse. Police say she was found at the Visvesvaraya Pickup Dam in Doddaballapur taluk, just outside Devanahalli.
Puspavati had worked as a lecturer and married a man named Venu 11 months earlier. According to reports, she and her family say Venu and his relatives pressured her for dowry and land. She told supporters that her husband constantly harassed her from the start of the marriage and would stay away when she tried to speak with him. In a video she recorded before her death, Puspavati described the cruelty she endured.
The woman said her in‑laws directed her to wait for things to improve, even suggesting she have a child with their younger son. She also claimed her brother‑in‑law made crude remarks that pushed her into deep mental distress. During arguments, Puspavati was struck and knocked out of the house. The father‑in‑law threatened that she would never return if she pressed a police complaint. When Puspavati warned the family she would file a case, they grabbed her neck and forced her out, assaulting her and even her brother‑in‑law.
After the incidents, her parents filed a missing‑person complaint at the Doddaballapur Women’s Police Station. Later, she approached the local police with a new complaint about the ongoing abuse. The authorities say a full investigation will follow and police are still gathering details.
The tragedy has spotlighted the problem of domestic abuse and dowry harassment in Karnataka. Many are calling for tighter protection for victims and stronger support from law enforcement to prevent similar suicides.
