Congress leader and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel called for stronger security for Rahul Gandhi on Monday. As the Leader of the Opposition in India’s Lok Sabha, Gandhi faces threats from the BJP, Baghel said, because they can’t handle facing him head-on.
“The BJP’s true colors are out—they believe in violence,” Baghel told reporters in Raipur. “They’re threatening Rahul Gandhi since they can’t beat him fairly. The BJP hasn’t done anything about it, so we demand his security gets ramped up right away.”
At the same time, Congress general secretary KC Venugopal slammed the BJP for staying silent after one of their spokespeople allegedly made a death threat against Gandhi during a TV debate. Venugopal wrote a letter to Home Minister Amit Shah demanding quick action, but he hasn’t heard back yet.
“This is a straight-up threat,” Venugopal said. “Why isn’t Kerala Police stepping in? We sent the letter to Amit Shah because of it. The CRPF keeps warning Rahul Gandhi about security gaps, yet they’re the ones leaking info. A BJP spokesperson in Kerala made this clear threat—it’s part of a larger plot, we believe. No word from the Home Ministry so far.”
Venugopal pressed the BJP to explain: “Is this their official position? If not, they need to punish the spokesperson. Their silence speaks volumes.”
The issue blew up after Venugopal’s letter on Sunday targeted BJP spokesperson Prithvi Mahadev in Kerala. During a News18 Kerala debate, Mahadev reportedly said Gandhi “will be shot in the chest.” Venugopal called it a deliberate incitement of violence, not just loose talk.
In the letter, Venugopal warned Shah that ignoring this would look like the government is okay with attacks on the opposition leader. “It puts Rahul Gandhi’s life at risk and attacks India’s Constitution and rule of law,” he wrote. “A ruling party spokesperson saying this endangers not just him, but every citizen’s safety.”
Venugopal shared the letter on X, highlighting how such threats undermine democracy. The Congress push for action against the Rahul Gandhi death threat has sparked wider talks on political violence in India.
