Actor Vijay, the head of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), shared his heartbreak over a tragic stampede at his party’s campaign rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The incident on Saturday evening left at least 36 people dead, including women and children, and injured dozens more in what turned into a chaotic crush.

A massive crowd had packed the venue to hear Vijay speak during his statewide tour. But things quickly spiraled out of control when fans surged forward in a crowded spot, leading to pushing, falls, and deadly trampling. Eyewitnesses described panic spreading fast, with people suffocating or getting crushed under the weight of the throng.

Police and emergency teams rushed in to help, but the sheer density of the gathering made rescues tough. Officials say 36 victims died from the ordeal, while around 60 others landed in hospitals—some in critical condition. At least three children ended up in intensive care, adding to the sorrow.

Vijay took to X (formerly Twitter) that same evening to voice his grief. “My heart is shattered; I’m in unbearable pain and sorrow that words can’t capture,” he wrote. He offered deep condolences to the families of those lost in the Karur stampede and prayed for a quick recovery for the injured.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin stepped up fast with relief measures. Families of the victims who died will get Rs 10 lakh each in compensation, while injured survivors receive Rs 1 lakh and priority medical care. He sent senior ministers and officials to Karur to manage rescues and support hospitals. Plus, Stalin ordered a judicial inquiry to uncover what went wrong in the TVK rally stampede and suggest ways to prevent future tragedies at large events.

The news hit hard across India, with leaders like Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan and Congress’s Rahul Gandhi expressing shock and sympathy for the 36 lives lost and the 60 injured in the Tamil Nadu stampede. As investigations continue, the focus stays on helping those affected and ensuring safety at public rallies.
