Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav slammed a shocking case of gang‑rape that took place inside a hospital in Durgapur, West Bengal, on Saturday. She described the crime as “horrific” and blamed a worrying rise in violence against women across India.
Yadav said the West Bengal incident is part of a larger trend. In Uttar Pradesh, she pointed out, crimes against women have more than doubled in the past decade. “The state must do more to protect women,” she said, criticizing the Yogi‑led government for failing to create a safe environment.
She also attacked the Uttar Pradesh government’s neglect of its duty to guide society. Yadav reminded that the Samajwadi Party had launched the 1090 helpline to support women, but said the government has weakened such services.
Police say the victim is a second‑year medical student at a private college in Durgapur. She comes from Jaleswar, Odisha, and is currently undergoing medical tests while investigators look into the allegation. More details are still pending.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi reacted strongly to the crime, calling it “highly condemnable and painful.” On X, he urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to take strong legal action. He added that the Odisha government would fully support the victim’s family and ensure all necessary assistance.
The case has sparked a wider debate on how governments across India are handling woman‑safety issues and the effectiveness of support helplines. These developments continue to unfold as law‑enforcement officials work to investigate the alleged gang‑rape and deliver justice.
