Union Minister Jitendra Singh visited the flood-ravaged Kolain village in Pathankot, Punjab, on Wednesday to bring some hope to residents hit hard by the recent deluge. He assured everyone that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is personally keeping a close eye on the Punjab floods situation and promised to rebuild homes even stronger than before.
Speaking to locals in the flood-affected areas, Singh emphasized PM Modi’s deep concern for Punjab. “The Prime Minister is monitoring the situation daily and getting regular updates,” he said. Singh revealed he had held a virtual meeting with district collectors from 23 Punjab districts to speed up relief efforts. For those whose homes got washed away in the floods, the government has rolled out two key supports: temporary shelters right away, and plans to reconstruct on safer grounds where land erosion hit hard. “We’ll make sure the new homes are better and more secure,” Singh added while talking to .
This visit comes amid ongoing recovery from the devastating Punjab floods, which have caused massive damage across the state. Earlier, Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi wrote a letter to PM Modi on Tuesday, urging a bigger relief package. Gandhi highlighted the shocking scale of destruction he saw during his own trip to Punjab, including over 4 lakh acres of paddy crops wiped out, more than 10 lakh animals lost, and lakhs of homes—mostly from marginalized communities—swept away. He estimated the total loss at least Rs 20,000 crore and called the central government’s initial Rs 1,600 crore aid too small, saying it doesn’t do justice to flood victims in Punjab.
Gandhi stressed the need for national support: “In this tough time, the Centre and all of India must stand with every farmer, soldier, and family in Punjab.” He noted that thousands of acres still remain underwater, villages are isolated, and huge areas of farmland won’t be usable anytime soon due to the flood devastation.
PM Modi himself stepped in earlier, visiting Punjab on September 9 to assess the damage from heavy rains, cloudbursts, and floods. He flew over the worst-hit spots and held a review meeting in Gurdaspur with officials and local leaders. During the visit, he announced Rs 1,600 crore in extra financial assistance for Punjab flood relief, on top of the Rs 12,000 crore already available through state funds. The government also fast-tracked the second installment of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and PM Kisan Samman Nidhi to help farmers and affected families.
That same day, PM Modi extended his support to neighboring Himachal Pradesh, another state battered by floods, cloudbursts, rains, and landslides. He announced Rs 1,500 crore in aid there too, along with the advance release of SDRF and PM Kisan funds to kickstart recovery efforts.
As Punjab continues to battle the aftermath of these catastrophic floods, both leaders’ actions show a push for quick relief and long-term rebuilding to help the state get back on its feet.
