In a heartfelt meeting in New Delhi, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri and several respected Sikh community members met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. They urged him to find a special place for the sacred ‘Jore Sahib’—the holy footwear relics of Guru Gobind Singh and Mata Sahib Kaur—so that devotees can easily pay their respects in large numbers.
Puri presented a detailed report from a committee on how to safely preserve and display these precious Sikh relics. The ‘Jore Sahib’ includes the right footwear of the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, measuring 11 inches by 3.5 inches, and the left footwear of his wife, Mata Sahib Kaur, at 9 inches by 3 inches. These items hold immense spiritual value for the Sikh sangat.
Sharing the family story on X, Puri revealed that his ancestors received these relics directly from Guru Gobind Singh and Mata Sahib Kaur over 300 years ago. “Our family has been truly blessed to serve these holy relics since they were gifted to us,” he wrote. Legend says Puri’s ancestor served the Guru devotedly, and when asked for a reward, he humbly requested permission to keep the ‘Jore Sahib’ as a lasting blessing for his family.
The latest keeper was Puri’s late cousin, Sardar Jasmeet Singh Puri, who lived in Delhi’s Karol Bagh. The street there is now named Guru Gobind Singh Marg in honor of these sacred items. As one of the senior family members, Puri stepped in after a letter from his cousin’s wife, Manpreet, asking for a fitting home where more people could visit.
To ensure everything is authentic, Puri had the relics examined by the Ministry of Culture, including carbon testing to confirm their historical and religious significance. The committee’s recommendations aim to give the ‘Jore Sahib’ the respect it deserves.
Puri praised PM Modi’s deep respect for Sikh teachings and the community. “Under his leadership, we’ve seen compassionate steps to improve Sikh religious sites and make them more accessible over the past 11 years,” he added. This meeting highlights the government’s commitment to preserving Sikh heritage and supporting the faithful.
