Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan strongly backed the One Nation One Election proposal during a press interaction in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, on Sunday. He called the bill a major step forward for India’s growth.
Chouhan pointed out that local bodies across the state, from districts and panchayats to municipalities and block panchayats, have all passed resolutions in favor of One Nation One Election. “Prime Minister Modi’s resolve must be fulfilled,” he told reporters. “Every level—from district panchayats to village ones—has united to say this is in the country’s best interest.”
He slammed frequent elections as a key roadblock to India’s progress. “Constant polls hurt everyone and stall our development,” Chouhan said. “Soon, people will demand change for the nation’s sake.”
The One Nation One Election Bill, aimed at syncing national, state, and local elections, went to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) in December 2024 for review. On August 12, the Lok Sabha approved an extension for the panel’s report. This gives the JPC more time to analyze the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
PP Chaudhary, who chairs the JPC, moved the motion. It pushes the deadline to the first day of the last week of the 2025 winter session. The bills, introduced in the Lok Sabha last December, are now under joint examination by both houses of Parliament.
Supporters argue that One Nation One Election could cut costs, boost governance, and reduce election disruptions in India. The debate continues as the committee works toward its recommendations.
