Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district launched a night raid near Bhavisa village that ended in the death of a wanted gangster, Nafis alias Muda. The 1‑lakh‑rupee reward on his head had made the police keen to catch him.
The encounter happened under the jurisdiction of Kandhla police station. Superintendent of Police NP Singh said that all outpost in‑charges and station officers had doubled‑down on night checks to crack down on criminals. “We spotted two people on a motorcycle near Bhavisa on Friday night,” Singh explained. “When we tried to stop them, they opened fire. A fierce gunfight followed.”
Nafis was hit by gunfire and was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors confirmed his death. He was a local from Kandhla’s Mohalla Khel and had more than thirty cases in Shamli alone, including murder, dacoity, armed robbery, extortion and fake‑currency scams. He had been on the run for years, attacking people across western Uttar Pradesh. Police also found that the motorcycle’s number plate was fake.
From the spot, officers seized a country‑made pistol and the motorcycle used in the crime. While Nafis was neutralised, his accomplice fled into the night. Several police teams have followed the trail and are still hunting the escapee and the rest of the gang.
The district is part of a larger government push to make Uttar Pradesh “gangster‑free.” In recent weeks, state police have stepped up operations and dozens of gang members have been caught or encountered, echoing Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s vision for safer streets.
The December encounter shows that authorities are willing to use swift night raids and full‑strength teams to protect communities from organised crime. Police urge anyone with more information about the gang to come forward and help keep Uttar Pradesh safe.
