Security forces in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, kept a tight watch as locals performed Friday prayers without incident, almost a week after clashes rocked the city. Officials from the Uttar Pradesh Police worked hard to maintain peace, dividing the entire area into super zones, zones, and sectors. They stationed officers at key spots and even brought in extra teams from nearby regions.

District Magistrate Avinash Singh explained the setup: “Today’s Friday prayers went smoothly because we planned ahead. We’ve got deployments everywhere, plus drones buzzing overhead for monitoring.” He added that religious leaders urged worshippers to head straight home after prayers, and police stayed in touch with community leaders to keep things calm.

The heavy security came after violent protests on September 26, where a crowd gathered outside the Ala Hazrat Dargah and the home of Ittehad-e-Millat Council (IMC) chief Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan. Protesters waved “I Love Mohammad” placards and allegedly threw stones at officers following the prayers.

In a related move, Uttar Pradesh police arrested IMC National General Secretary Nafees Khan and his son Farman Khan over the Bareilly protests. This brings the total arrests to 81. Police say Farman managed the group’s Facebook page, and the duo confessed that many others joined the conspiracy. Senior Superintendent of Police Anurag Arya shared the details during a briefing.

To curb further unrest, the Bareilly administration cut mobile internet and broadband services for 48 hours, from 3 p.m. on October 2 until 3 p.m. on October 4.

Meanwhile, in Kanpur, police ran flag marches to ensure smooth Friday prayers there too. Assistant Commissioner of Police Ashutosh Kumar Singh reported no issues: “Everything’s under control. Our teams are out in full force, and there’s no sign of trouble.”
