UPSC Tests AI Facial Recognition in Gurugram to Boost Exam Security
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) recently ran a successful pilot for AI-enabled facial authentication technology in Gurugram. This new tool aims to make candidate verification faster and more secure during exams. Officials shared details about the trial on Thursday.
UPSC teamed up with the National e-Governance Division (NeGD) for this anti-impersonation measure. They tested it during two major exams on September 14: the National Defence Academy and Naval Academy II Examination 2025, and the Combined Defence Services (CDS) II Examination 2025.
UPSC Chairman Ajay Kumar praised the initiative. "We’re all about using top-notch tech to keep exams fair and transparent," he said. "This AI-based facial recognition pilot is a big move toward smarter, safer, and more efficient processes." He also stressed that they prioritize protecting candidate privacy while modernizing exams.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Kumar added: "UPSC nailed the trial of face authentication at select centres in Gurgaon. It went smooth and seamless—heading toward smarter, secure exams!"
The tech matches candidates’ live facial images with the photos they submitted during registration. This happens at exam centres in Gurugram, cutting verification time to just 8-10 seconds per person. It speeds up entry while adding strong security against cheating.
The pilot covered about 1,129 candidates across sessions, with around 2,700 successful scans. No major glitches reported—it all ran like clockwork.
This trial fits into the Indian government’s push to fight exam malpractices like impersonation. The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, now slaps tough penalties: up to 10 years in jail and fines up to Rs 1 crore for offenders. UPSC’s move shows how AI facial recognition could become a game-changer for secure government exams nationwide.
If this works out, expect more tech upgrades in future UPSC tests to keep things fair and hassle-free for aspirants.
