ED Summons Actress Mimi Chakraborty in 1xBet Money Laundering Probe
Former Trinamool Congress MP and actress Mimi Chakraborty has landed in hot water. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoned her on Sunday in connection with an alleged money laundering case linked to the illegal betting app 1xBet. Official sources confirm she’ll need to show up at the ED’s Delhi headquarters on September 15.
This case revolves around 1xBet, a controversial online betting platform that’s already drawn in several celebrities. The ED has grilled multiple actresses and cricketers over suspected illegal activities tied to the app.
In a similar move, the ED has also summoned Bollywood actress Urvashi Rautela. She must appear before the agency on September 16 at their Delhi office.
Cricketers aren’t escaping the spotlight either. Former Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan recently faced intense questioning from the ED. The probe focuses on his endorsement deal with 1xBet, which authorities call an "unauthorised" gaming app. Dhawan, who owns the South Delhi Superstarz team in the Delhi Premier League, retired from all cricket formats in August last year after a stellar career. He spent hours answering questions during his appearance in the national capital.
Suresh Raina, another ex-Indian cricketer, also got summoned recently in the same 1xBet money laundering investigation.
So, what’s the deal with 1xBet? The company’s India website promotes a wide range of sports betting options, including the Aviator Game Online, cricket betting lines, and online casino slots. Users can place bets on football, basketball, cricket, tennis, and even e-sports via Telegram payments. Headquartered in Cyprus, 1xBet ranks among the world’s biggest online casinos and has sponsored football clubs in Spain and France. But troubles mounted after probes into financial irregularities forced it to pull out of markets like the UK, US, Russia, Spain, and France.
Dhawan’s link-up with the app echoes last year’s Mahadev Satta App scandal, which involved stars like Ranbir Kapoor, Boman Irani, Hina Khan, and Shraddha Kapoor. The ED kicked off its investigation after a flashy UAE reception hosted by one of Mahadev’s founders. It uncovered a massive Rs 5,000 crore hawala racket spanning the UAE and Pakistan.
On a broader note, India is cracking down hard on online gambling. Last month, Parliament passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, to oversee online gaming and e-sports while banning any games that involve real money bets. Government records show authorities issued a whopping 1,524 orders to ban gambling platforms between 2022 and June 2025.
