Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath highlighted the state’s remarkable turnaround during a virtual meeting with mayors on Monday, focusing on the vision for a “Developed UP-2047.” Speaking from Lucknow, he declared that Uttar Pradesh has shed its old “bimaru” label—meaning backward—and now stands as one of India’s key growth engines.
Yogi pointed out how things have changed since 2017. Back then, investors steered clear of the state because of bad roads and security worries. But today, Uttar Pradesh boasts an extensive network of highways and solid connections to neighboring states. Every district headquarters now links up with two- or four-lane roads, drawing in big investments and boosting connectivity across the region.
The chief minister shared impressive numbers to back this up. Uttar Pradesh’s GDP has surged from Rs 12.75 lakh crore eight years ago to a projected Rs 36 lakh crore by the end of this financial year. He praised mayors for ramping up earnings in their municipal corporations and urged them to aim even higher. “There are possibilities beyond this,” Yogi said.
On the jobs front, the One District One Product (ODOP) program has created over 2 crore employment opportunities, spotlighting local strengths like handicrafts and agriculture in districts. Plus, the state government has filled 8.5 lakh positions so far. Uttar Pradesh also leads with India’s first inland waterway link from Varanasi to Haldia, opening new doors for trade and transport.
Investment proposals now total a whopping Rs 45 lakh crore, a far cry from the state’s struggling past. Yogi credited this shift to a strong push for development. “It’s the same state, but the will to grow has transformed it,” he noted. Cities like Ayodhya, Kashi, Mathura, and Vrindavan have seen huge makeovers, blending heritage with modern infrastructure.
No longer dismissed as a bimaru state, Uttar Pradesh is powering India’s economic rise, Yogi emphasized.
