In a lively session on Nov. 4, the Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha filled with cheers as the state celebrated its 25th anniversary. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami delivered a speech that marked a historic moment: the legislature formally recognized the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on the 100 th anniversary of its founding. It is the first time a state’s constitution‑adhering body has honored the RSS in this way.
Dhami stood before a portrait of Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who helped create Uttarakhand when it split from Uttar Pradesh 25 years ago. “The RSS has spread a stream of cultural revival, social harmony, self‑respect, and patriotism across India,” he said. “It has lit the national consciousness in every corner of our country.”
The crowd of lawmakers clapped in unison, echoing his praise for a India that now stands proud of its culture, scientific mind and ancient traditions. He credited the RSS’s century of discipline with wiping away colonial inferiority vibes. “This state has endured hard times but kept moving forward, and with your support, Uttarakhand will soon become the best state in India,” Dhami added, prompting cheers from the benches.
In a poetic twist, Dhami quoted a familiar Shakha song used by swayamsevaks: “Yeh uthal‑puthal uchhal lehar, path se na digane paayegi…” – a reminder that perseverance will lead them to their destination.
Opposition leaders, who usually break speeches, stayed quiet, letting the words resonate. Speaker Ritu Khanduri Bhushan called for a voice vote. The call was met with a booming “Aye” everywhere, and the resolution passed unanimously.
Outside, schoolchildren waved Indian flags while veterans of the 1994 state‑hood agitation shed tears of pride. Inside, the RSS’s 100‑year legacy received a loud constitutional salute – a moment etched into Uttarakhand’s history.
