Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi slammed the exclusion of women journalists from a press conference held by Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in Delhi. She called the move “very unfortunate” and said it shows the Taliban’s attitude toward women.
During the event on Friday, which was part of a week‑long visit by the Afghan delegation, the ministry’s spokesperson said that Indian female reporters were not allowed to attend. Chaturvedi urged the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to address the issue and to remind the Taliban that India values press freedom and gender equality.
“I hope the MEA sends a letter to the Taliban,” she said. “India follows its Constitution, which guarantees freedom of the press and equal rights for women. Excluding them from a public forum is shameful.”
The incident sparked criticism from other Indian leaders. Rahul Gandhi, a Congress MP and opposition figure, posted on X that excluding women journalists sends a wrong message. He argued that silence in the face of discrimination contradicts India’s promises of “Nari Shakti” (women’s power).
The press conference was the first high‑level Afghan delegation visit to India since the Taliban seized power in August 2021. The controversy highlights ongoing concerns about women’s safety and equal participation in media coverage, both in Afghanistan and internationally.
