Indian Vice‑President C.P. Radhakrishnan, who was in Seychelles for a short visit, attended the swearing‑in of the island nation’s new leader, President Patrick Herminie, on Sunday. The ceremony took place at Unity Stadium in Victoria, the capital of the Indian Ocean archipelago.
Radhakrishnan took the opportunity to greet Herminie and send India’s best wishes. In an X post he said, “Delighted to attend the swearing‑in ceremony of H.E. Dr Patrick Herminie as President of the Republic of Seychelles at Unity Stadium, Victoria, Seychelles, conveying my greetings and best wishes on behalf of the Government and people of India.”
The Vice‑President also used the trip to meet Mauritius’ Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, who was visiting Seychelles. They discussed ways to deepen the close “friendship‑like” ties that India has with both island partners, drawing on shared history and culture.
Back in India, the Vice‑President’s office shared a snapshot of the Indian community in Seychelles. Radhakrishnan spoke to community members about the “long‑standing, multi‑faceted ties” between India and Seychelles and highlighted how the Indian diaspora helps strengthen those bonds.
India’s visit to the islands was brief – just enough time to lay a hand on new president‑elect, remind him of India’s steady support, and reaffirm the long‑tested friendship that meets regularly in maritime and cultural exchanges.
The visit underscores India’s focus on the Indian Ocean region, where it works closely with Seychelles and Mauritius to promote regional stability and prosperity.
