Vijay breaks silence on Karur stampede, says didn’t visit victims to avoid ‘unusual situation’

Actor-turned-politician Vijay shared a heartfelt video message on Tuesday, four days after a tragic stampede at his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally in Karur killed 41 people. He explained why he hasn’t visited the grieving families yet, saying it was to avoid creating more chaos on the ground.

“I’ve never felt such deep pain in my life,” Vijay said in the emotional clip. He promised to meet the victims’ families and those injured soon, adding that the full truth about the Karur stampede would come out shortly.

The incident happened on September 27 at a rally in Velusamypuram near Karur, where thousands surged toward the stage to see Vijay. The crowd crush turned deadly, claiming 41 lives—including women and children—and injuring around 60 others. Police pointed to poor planning by organizers, who underestimated the turnout and didn’t manage entry points well. Sudden power outages added to the panic, making things worse.

Vijay also took a strong stand against the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government. After cops filed cases against his TVK colleagues, including leaders Bussy N Anand and CTR Nirmal Kumar, for rally mismanagement, he urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin directly: “If you’re thinking of revenge, target me instead—leave my party workers alone.” Vijay stressed he’s ready to face whatever comes his way.

Stalin rushed to Karur right after the tragedy, announcing aid for the affected families and forming a one-member inquiry commission led by retired judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan to investigate the lapses. DMK insiders say the government plans to hold off on blame until the report drops. The chief minister has also called on people to stay calm and skip spreading rumors about the Karur stampede.

Opposition leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) from AIADMK slammed the DMK, calling the 41 deaths a “major administrative failure” in Tamil Nadu. He argued that better safety measures and police coordination could’ve stopped the disaster. EPS accused the ruling party of going after opposition figures while dodging responsibility for the security slip-ups.

Vijay’s message seems aimed at calming his supporters amid the heartbreak while pushing back against the government’s story on the rally tragedy. All eyes in Tamil Nadu are now on the inquiry report, which could spark big political changes from one of the state’s worst crowd disasters.
