Chennai, November 5 – Vijay, the president of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), told party members that the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections will be a “straight‑up” battle against the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). He has announced himself as TVK’s candidate for chief minister and said the party has a “hundred‑per‑cent chance of victory.”

The leader’s address occurred at a special general council meeting in Mamallapuram, attended by more than 2,000 members, including district secretaries and other office‑bearers from across the state. It was Vijay’s first major speech since the Karur stampede on 27 September, which took 41 lives during a TVK rally.

Vijay began with a two‑minute silence to remember the victims. He called the Karur incident a “temporary hurdle” that the DMK, led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, had engineered. He accused the ruling government of exploiting the tragedy to hurt TVK’s reputation, pointing to a single‑member inquiry and the deployment of senior IAS and police officers as attempts to tarnish the party.

During his talk, Vijay read passages from the Supreme Court’s commentary on the Karur case, insisting that the truth would eventually vindicate TVK and expose the government’s manipulation.

The council passed 12 key resolutions, including a demand that the Election Commission of India stop the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, arguing the process could disenfranchise legitimate voters.

Vijay concluded, “The Karur tragedy has only strengthened our resolve. We have learned painful lessons, but we will move forward with greater determination, discipline, and a commitment to serve the people.” He received loud applause from delegates.

With this announcement, TVK officially enters the 2026 elections as a distinct force, setting up a high‑stakes contest with the DMK for control of Tamil Nadu.
