On Monday, Tamil Nadu’s popular actor and TVK president, C. Joseph Vijay, met with the families of those who lost their lives in the Karur stampede. The meeting took place at a private resort in Mamallapuram, where party leaders had brought the bereaved people by bus and sometimes by plane.
Vijay spoke directly to each family, telling them he would cover all costs for their surviving children’s education and any medical needs. “I stand by you in this difficult time. Your pain is mine too,” he said, emphasizing his personal commitment.
The meeting marks Vijay’s first face‑to‑face contact with the families since the tragic crush on September 27 during a TVK rally. The incident, which claimed 41 lives—including women and children—upended the Tamil Nadu political scene and drew widespread criticism over crowd management at political events.
Originally, Vijay planned to travel to Karur to offer condolences, but security concerns forced the plan to be postponed. Instead, TVK leaders brought the groups to Chennai for a secure and private gathering. About 38 families rode private buses, while a few arrived by air. The event was held behind closed doors, attended only by close party aides.
Senior party officials say the gesture is meant to let the families know Vijay is not only a movie star but also a responsible political leader. The tragedy has intensified scrutiny of the conduct of rallies and crowd control. Courts – the Madras High Court and the Supreme Court – are monitoring the ongoing investigations.
Vijay’s outpouring of support is seen as a significant step toward healing for those affected by the Karur stampede, reaffirming his role as both an entertainer and a public figure committed to his community.
