President Droupadi Murmu shared warm Vijayadashami greetings with people across India today, calling the festival a powerful reminder to build a nation full of peace and harmony.
Vijayadashami, also known as Dussehra, marks the exciting end of the nine-day Shardiya Navaratri celebrations. This Hindu festival falls on the tenth day of the Ashvin month in the lunisolar calendar and stands for the triumph of good over evil—a theme that resonates deeply in Indian culture.
In her message, Murmu said, “On this auspicious occasion of Vijayadashami, I extend my heartfelt greetings and best wishes to all my countrymen.” She highlighted how the festival symbolizes the victory of dharma (righteousness) over adharma (unrighteousness), urging everyone to embrace truth and justice in daily life.
People celebrate Vijayadashami in vibrant ways across India, from burning effigies of the demon king Ravana in Ravana Dahan rituals to joyful Durga Puja festivities. Murmu noted that these traditions capture India’s core values, encouraging us to let go of negative traits like anger and ego while embracing positive ones such as courage and determination.
The president wrapped up by expressing her hope: “I wish that this festival inspires us to create a society and country where everyone moves forward together with justice, equality, and harmony.” The name Vijayadashami itself breaks down to “vijaya” for victory and “dashami” for the tenth day, perfectly capturing the spirit of righteousness winning out against evil.
Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also joined in the celebrations via a post on X (formerly Twitter). He described Vijayadashami as “a symbol of the victory of good and truth over evil and untruth.” Modi added, “My wish is that on this sacred occasion, everyone receives the inspiration to continuously progress on the path of courage, wisdom, and devotion.” He ended with, “My warmest greetings of Vijayadashami to my family members across the country.”
