Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the birth anniversary of Indian social reformer Nanaji Deshmukh on Saturday, paying tribute on his social‑media platform X. Modi posted a heartfelt video and caption, calling Nanaji “a visionary social reformer, a nation‑builder, and a lifelong advocate of self‑reliance and rural empowerment.”

In the clip, the PM highlighted Nanaji’s dedication to national service. “He lived his life for the country,” Modi said. “Through the Deendayal Upadhyay Institute he inspired people to serve the nation. He invited young couples to help, and hundreds joined the development of villages.” Modi also noted Nanaji’s choice to turn down a cabinet post—following the example of JP Narayan—and his three‑decade focus on the districts of Chitrakoot and Gonda.

Modi added a second X post sharing a 1978 Janata Party statement, stressing Nanaji’s admiration for Loknayak JP and his vision for youth development and nation‑building.

Born on 11 October 1916 in Maharashtra’s Hingoli district, Nanaji worked on education, health care, and rural self‑reliance. He drew inspiration from Lokmanya Tilak and Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, the founder of the RSS. His lifelong commitment was guided by the principle of “Antyodaya”—uplifting the poorest—and the practice of “Gramodaya,” the holistic development of villages.

Nanaji’s legacy continues to inspire Indians to build a society where every person can live a dignified life. His work reminds leaders that true progress requires integrated rural development—education, health, economy, and sustainability—anchored in self‑reliance.
